Man dies from flesh-eating bacteria, widow sues hospital

Last April, a Beaumont man stricken with streptococcal infection and necrotizing fasciitis died from toxic shock one day after being admitted to Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital.

On Aug. 5, Hope Adkins filed suit against Baptist Hospital and treating physician Dr. Nathaniel Alford in Jefferson County District Court, alleging the two defendants delayed their treatment of her late husband, Brandon Adkins.

Court papers show Adkins sought treatment for his strep infection and necrotizing fasciitis, a type of flesh-eating bacteria, on April 24, 2009.

He died the next day of toxic shock syndrome due to infection.

"Defendants were proximate causes of the defeat of ... Adkins," the suit states, adding that the defendants negligently delayed treatment and failed to consult an infectious disease specialist.

Adkins' family is suing for survival damages and loss of inheritance.

The plaintiffs are represented by Jasper attorney Blair Bisbey of the Seale, Stover & Bisbey law firm.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
