Author of poem says embroidered pillows violate copyright

TYLER-The author of a copyrighted poem about quilts has filed a lawsuit against several companies for selling wall decorations and pillows that display her work.

Renee Baker filed suit against Audrey's Crafts and Home Decor Inc. doing business as Your Heart's Delight by Audrey, Audrey M. Mull, The Rustic Country Barn LLC, Carlton S. Fitch doing business as The Rustic Country Barn, Chalet Enterprises Inc. doing business as Quilter's Gift Shop and Kimberly M. Vega doing business as KDC Country Village on Aug. 20 in the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division.

Baker created and published a poem entitled "Families are Like Quilts" which she claims was copyrighted. The poem was developed into a stitchery pattern which was copyrighted in 2005.

Baker accuses the defendants of copyright infringement by selling a wall decoration and pillow that include unauthorized copies of Baker's "Families are Like Quilts" poem.

The plaintiff is asking the court to permanently enjoin the defendants from continued violation of the copyrighted work, for compensatory damages including damages in the amount of $150,000 per infringed work, attorneys' fees, court costs and interest.

Baker is represented by Dallas attorney Daniel V. Thompson. Jury trial requested.

U.S. District Judge Michael H. Schneider is assigned to the case.
