LUFKIN - A letter carrier is suing the U.S. Postal Service for racial discrimination, claiming he lost his job for misusing his credit card while a white co-worker did not.
Claiming violations of his civil rights, Cleo Brooks, Jr. filed suit against Postmaster General John E. Potter on Feb. 22 in the Eastern District of Texas, Lufkin Division.
According to the lawsuit, Brooks is a black male who has a permanent physical and mental disability as a result of being run over by a drunk driver while delivering mail.
Brooks states he was terminated from his position after allegedly misusing his government credit card. He argues his termination was racial discrimination because a white co-worker was not terminated after he also allegedly misused his government credit card.
Brooks is asking the court to direct the Postmaster General to reinstate Brooks to his former position and is seeking an award of damages, costs and attorney's fees.
The former postal employee is acting as his own attorney.
U.S. District Judge Ron Clark is assigned to the case.
