Century Surety sues motorist for backing into gas pump

Hoping to recoup its loses, Century Surety Co. is suing Nederland resident Katina Johnson for backing into a gas pump and causing more than $30,000 in damages.

The suit was filed Aug. 11 in Jefferson County District Court.

Court records show that on Aug. 27, 2009, Johnson backed her car into a gas pump at Superstop No. 5 in Port Arthur, costing the insurer of the gas station, Century, $30,209.86 to remedy the damage.

The suit accuses Johnson of negligently failing to keep a proper lookout, striking a stationary object and driver inattention.

Century is for actual damages and all court costs.

Dallas attorney Laura Schmidt of Downs Stanford represents the company.

Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
