Woman sues Christus for botched foot surgery

A woman claiming screws were improperly placed during foot surgery has filed suit against the doctor who performed the surgery and the hospital in which she was treated.

Debrah Williams filed suit against Dr. Richard Schleiffer and Christus Hospital St. Mary in Port Arthur on Dec. 16 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, on Dec. 18, 2009, Williams had foot surgery at St. Mary Hospital.

The suit does not give any specific details about the surgery or Williams' alleged injuries.

The suit accuses Dr. Schleiffer of negligently failing to protect the nerves in or near the surgical site, performing an unnecessary surgery and of improper screw placement.

Christus is accused of failing to protect the foot from surgical damage.

The plaintiff is suing for exemplary damages, plus her alleged mental anguish, medical expenses and impairment.

Houston attorney Todd Kelly represents her.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 6oth District Court, is assigned to the case.
