Wrongful death suit filed over man's fall at fire station construction site

GALVESTON - The mother of a man who reportedly died of injuries sustained while working on the Tiki Island fire station last year has filed suit against his employer.

In a lawsuit filed May 3 in Galveston County District Court, Elodia Michaca Trujillo claims JC Stonewall Constructors did nothing to prevent Salvador Meza from falling off metal cross beams at the job site of the fire station on Nov. 12, 2011.

The original petition shows the decedent "lost his balance and fell over 14 feet to the concrete ground below."

"As a result of this fall, Mr. Meza suffered severe personal injuries and died three days later," the suit says.

Trujillo asserts Meza was working on the project under the control and supervision of the defendant.

She blames the respondent for failing to provide proper fall protection for her son as well as failed to provide any equipment necessary to protect him from falls.

"The defendant Stonewall exercised control over Mr. Meza with regard to safety, safety training and supervision in the details of how the steel erection work was to be performed," the suit says.

Consequently, the complainant seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

Meza's estate is represented by Miller Weisbrod LLP and The Law Office of Domingo Garcia.
