Veterinary assistant claims termination due to interracial relationship

Albritton 150x150

MARSHALL - A white veterinary assistant has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against her former employer that claims she was terminated for having a relationship with an African American male.

Stacy Mickelboro filed suit against Dean R. Yates and Carthage Veterinary Hospital on Dec. 20 in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division.

Mickelboro began her employment as a certified veterinary assistant for the defendants on Feb. 20, 2011. According to the lawsuit, she was singled out and treated in a disparate fashion because of her interracial relationship with a black man.

Mickelboro was terminated from her employment on Aug. 3 and was not given any reason for her termination.  She claims the termination was due to her continued interracial relationship and association with persons of a protected class.

The defendant is accused of racial discrimination in violation of Mickelboro’s civil rights.

The plaintiff is seeking an award of actual damages including lost wages and benefits, damages for emotional pain, suffering, inconvenience, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, interest, court costs and attorney’s fees.

Mickelboro is represented by Eric M. Albritton, Michael A. Benefield, Brian E. Dollar and Andralee C. Lloyd of Albritton Law Firm in Longview.

U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap is assigned to the case.
