Harris Co. man alleges Walgreen's fired him because of race

HOUSTON - A Harris County man asserts his termination from Walgreen's Inc. was because he is black, recent court papers say.

P.M. Beverly sued his former employer in Harris County District Court last month. It was removed to federal court on Oct. 17.

Walgreen's hired Beverly to an unspecified position in August 2004, the complaint states.

The plaintiff says during his course of employment, he became "aware of a company-wide practice of discriminating against African American employees and favoring employees outside of his protected category with more desirable work assignments and working conditions."

"Due to the defendant's pattern, practice, and policy of discrimination, the plaintiff was subjected to unfair terms, conditions and privileges of employment because of his race," the suit says.

According to Beverly, Walgreen's excluded him from job advancements, openings and promotions as well as subjected him to an "intimidating, hostile and offensive working environment that unreasonably interfered with the plaintiff's work performance and negatively affected his employment opportunities."

The respondent fired Beverly to which the suit argues his race "was a determining reason."

A jury trial is requested.

Attorney Woodrow Epperson of the Law Office of Woodrow Epperson in Houston is representing the complainant.
