A Canadian company is suing over claims a Texas competitor has infringed upon copyright. 

Geophysical Service Inc. filed a lawsuit May 16 in the Southern District Court of Texas against TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Co., citing copyright infringement.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff possesses copyrighted seismic lines, which are products of processing seismic, gravity and magnetic data.

GSI alleges it learned that in 1999 TGS requested GSI works from the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, instead of procuring a license through GSI which would have made GSI entitled to a $1.9 million fee.

The plaintiff claims the TGS then used the data to perform their own work which led to several millions of dollars of profits for TGS.

TGS is accused of copyright infringement and removal of copyright management information.

GSI is seeking damages and attorney's fees.

It is being represented in the case by attorneys Michael K. Barnhart and Joel B. Rothman of Schneider Rothman Intellectual Property Law Group PLLC.
