A man brought a lawsuit against his former employer for alleged unlawful workplace discrimination from 2013 through 2014.

Joshua H. Jumbo of Houston filed against Dolgencorp of Texas Inc. and Dollar General Corporation in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas May 29, claiming civil rights violation beginning in June 2013.

Jumbo, a Nigerian-born Texas resident, was employed by the defendants. He alleges that beginning on June 14, 2013 he was underpaid, not paid for overtime hours, given menial tasks, and discriminated against due to his national origin. The plaintiff asserts that he was insulted, retaliated against for complaining, and denied a salary increase. He also alleges that a supervisor stole his vacation pay.

Claiming that he was terminated without cause on Jan. 8, 2014, Jumbo filed a complaint with the Texas Workforce Commission, which ruled that his discharge was for reasons other than misconduct. The complaint cites the defendants with intentional unlawful employment practices; denial of equal employment opportunity; and reckless indifference to his federally protected rights.

Citing national origin discrimination, retaliation, negligent hiring, supervision and training practices, the plaintiff seeks statutory, compensatory, exemplary and punitive damages for back and front pay, benefits and earning capacity; pre- and post-judgment interest; attorney’s fees; expenses, and costs.
