A Harris County truck driver has sued his company, alleging unlawful employment practices.
Kendrick Stevens filed a lawsuit March 13 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against BFI Waste Services of Texas doing business as Allied Waste Services of Houston and Allied Waste Services of Conroe/Republic Services Inc. of Houston, alleging racial discrimination and retaliation.
According to the complaint, Stevens worked for Republic Services as a truck driver and he endured race discrimination and a hostile working environment, being treated differently as a black employee. When Stevens complained to human resources, his claims were ignored, according to the lawsuit.
The suit cites specific examples of inequity, such as not allowing Stevens a day off, suspending him against policy after a minor accident and management’s alleged refusal to clear his record.
When Stevens reported to work April 22, 2013, he was suspended; and on May 30, he was discharged on grounds a hearing had been held without him present and a decision was made regarding his termination, the suit states.
The plaintiff alleges his civil rights were violated and he experienced pain, suffering, anguish, medical expenses and loss of earnings.
Stevens seeks: actual, compensatory and exemplary damages; front and back pay with interest; fees; attorney fees; expenses and costs. He is represented by attorney Debra Jennings of Missouri City.
