Hot temps, cool times in store for Spindletop Spin
Hundreds of riders depart Crocket Street in last year's Spindletop Spin to benefit the Pro Bono Program.
Climbing temperatures make it the perfect time to climb aboard a bike and generate a little breeze while generating funds for a good cause.
The 4th Annual Spindletop Spin, a bicycle tour to benefit the Pro Bono Program of the Jefferson County Bar Association, will be held on June 6.
The event begins with registration at 6 a.m. at the Crockett Street Entertainment District in downtown Beaumont. Routes cater to a variety of experience levels with 70 mile, 43 mile, 33 mile or 10 mile tours.
An individual registration fee is $30, with family rides costing $25 for first parent, $15 for second parent and children under 18 riding free.
Early registration is available 3-7 p.m. June 5 on Crockett Street.
The mission of the Pro Bono Program is to provide legal assistance in civil matters to indigent and low-income clients living in Jefferson, Orange, Hardin and Liberty Counties. The program handles cases involving family law, administrative, health related, employment, wills/probate, landlord/tenant and consumer issues made possible by attorneys who volunteer their time.
Currently the program has 184 volunteer attorneys. During 2007 the volunteer attorneys provided legal assistance to over 300 new clients, donating over 2400 hours of legal services to the community.
The Spindletop Spin is held in memory of Jefferson County 259th District Family Court Judge Tom Mulvaney. Mulvaney, who died in 2005, was known as a champion of the Pro Bono Program having served on its board for many years. He also served as presiding judge for the National Adoption Day ceremonies that are held annually in Jefferson County.
While riders pedal along, ample rest stops will be supplied with fruit, drinks and snacks and police and ride marshals will provide support.
When the ride is over, the party starts as Party Train DJ Service pumps up the volume from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to lunch by the Spindletop Steakhouse there will be sno-cones and ice cream.
Registered riders are eligible for door prizes including a new bike from Bicycle Sports, a three-month membership to World Gym and gift cards from Smoothie King, Sanderson's Restaurant & Bar, Total Safety Inc. and Road ID.
A long list of sponsors includes many of the area's biggest law firms like Provost Umphrey Law Firm, Germer Gertz LLP, Jenkins & Martin LLP, Mehaffy Weber Law Firm, Orgain Bell & Tucker LLP, Strong Pipkin Bissell & Ledyard LLP, Clay Dugas Ltd. and J. Mark Smith & Associates. Many individuals and companies also provided sponsorship.
