An asbestos suit naming 10 defendant companies has been filed by a man and his wife, alleging the man's asbestos-related disease was caused by company negligence.
Robert and Betty Smith claim Robert Smith developed the disease during the course of his work as a laborer, paper machine operator, lubricator and vibration analyst, according to a lawsuit filed July 24 in Jefferson County District Court.
A total of 10 defendant companies are named in the suit, including A.W. Chesterton Co., Asten Group, CBS Corp., Cleaver Brooks, Crown Cork and Seal Co., GE, Honeywell International, Ingersoll-Rand Co., Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. and Union Carbide.
The plaintiffs allege the defending companies failed to adequately warn Robert Smith of the dangers of asbestos exposure.
They claim the companies also negligently failed to test the products to determine hazards associated with them and failed to remove their products from the market.
The plaintiffs allege the asbestos-related disease caused Robert Smith to experience physical pain, suffering, mental anguish, disfigurement and physical impairment. In addition, Robert Smith lost wages and incurred medical costs, he and his wife claim in the lawsuit.
Robert and Betty Smith are seeking unspecified actual and exemplary damages, plus costs, pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief to which they are entitled.
They are represented by Bryan O. Blevins Jr. and Aaryn K. Giblin of Provost Umphrey Law Firm in Beaumont.
The case has been assigned to Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court.
