Woman files slip-and-fall suit against 99 Cent store

A Jefferson County woman claims she suffered hip, neck and back damages after slipping on a substance while shopping at a Port Arthur store.

Betty J. Hatfield filed a lawsuit Oct. 13 in Jefferson County District Court against Progressive Discount, doing business as 99 Cent Plus Store.

Hatfield claims she entered 99 Cent on Dec. 7, 2008, when she fell on a slippery substance in an aisle, causing her injuries.

In addition to her injuries, Hatfield experienced pain, suffering, disability and mental anguish and incurred medical costs, according to the complaint.

Because 99 Cent owned the premises where Hatfield fell, she claims they should be liable for her injuries. In addition, she blames them for negligence, saying they knew of the dangerous condition, but failed to remedy it.

In her complaint, Hatfield seeks an unspecified judgment, plus other relief to which she may be entitled.

Edward B. Chatelain III of Nederland will be representing her.

The case has been assigned to Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court.
