Med-mal complaint alleges doc botched abdominal hysterectomy

Area resident Brandi Gana has filed suit against Dr. Gene Barry, a Beaumont surgeon who allegedly botched Gana's abdominal hysterectomy without realizing it.

The medical malpractice complaint was filed May 2 in Jefferson County District Court.

Court records show that Gana sought medical treatment from Barry for her chronic abdominal pain. On May 8, 2009, he performed an abdominal hysterectomy, during which he injured her and "failed to recognize the error," discharging Gana without correcting the unspecified complication.

"Plaintiff subsequently began to suffer severe pain and complications and (had to be) readmitted and treated for ... complications arising from the injury," the suit states, adding the she required additional surgeries to repair her bladder.

The suit accuses Dr. Barry of falling below the standard of care.

The plaintiff is suing for her alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages, plus all court costs.

Attorney Adam Terrell of the Beaumont law firm Weller, Green, Toups & Terrell represent her.

Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, has been assigned to the case.
