Continuance granted in suit over woman's misdiagnosis

A continuance resetting a trial date from June to July has been granted in a case alleging an area doctor and Renaissance Hospital misdiagnosed a patient.

As previously reported, Rachelle and Raymond Socia filed suit against Renaissance and Dr. Thomas Konjoyan on Nov. 26, 2008, in Jefferson County District Court.

On Monday, June 20 Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, granted the plaintiffs' motion for continuance, removing the case from his June docket and resetting the trial for sometime in late July.

In their motion, the Socias argue "additional time is need to obtain discovery and testimony" and that "mediation still could be reached in this case."

Court records show that Rachelle went to the emergency room at Renaissance Hospital in Groves on Sept. 12, 2006, with complaints of a sudden onset of severe neck pain, a splitting headache, fatigue, dizziness, disorientation and difficulty speaking.

Dr. Thomas Konjoyan attended to Rachelle and sent her home after diagnosing her with an acute myofascial cervical strain.

According to the lawsuit, however, Konjoyan incorrectly diagnosed Rachelle, and she returned to Renaissance Hospital on Nov. 9, 2006, unresponsive and vomiting. She was eventually diagnosed with a severe intraventricular hemorrhage.

"Unfortunately, because of Dr. Konjoyan's negligence, Ms. Socia's condition had gone untreated and deteriorated, leaving her with severe and permanent damages which could have been prevented," the suit states.

The Socias are seeking unspecified damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, costs and other relief to which they may be entitled.

Craig Lewis and John J. Brothers of The Lewis Law Firm in Houston represent them.

The defendants are represented in part by Houston attorney Barbara Hilburn of Harris, Hilburn & Sherer.
