Woman sues contractor over hurricane repairs to Galveston home

GALVESTON - A Travis County woman has filed suit against a contracting company claiming it failed to restore her house in Galveston.

Karen D. McCarty claims she paid Speich Contracting and Inspection LLC more than $100,000 to bring her residence back to its pre-Hurricane Ike state, but the defendant did not live up to its contractual obligations.

Court papers were filed June 17 in Galveston County Court at Law No. 3.

McCarty hired Speich in September 2009 to remodel and repair the property "in a good and workmanlike manner and in accordance with current building codes."

She agreed to pay the business $99,432 for labor and materials as well as $19,129 for extras.

According to the plaintiff, she had paid $75,000 when she discovered a number of overcharges and numerous tasks left undone.

Last February, McCarty ordered Speich to discontinue any further work, the suit states.

According to the suit, the plaintiff lost rental income because the house laid in disrepair.

She insists that the defendant has refused to remedy the situation nor compensate her.

Attorney Thomas W. McQuage of Galveston is representing McCarty, and Galveston County Court at Law No. 3 Judge Christopher Dupuy is presiding over the case.
