Woman sues after school cabinet strikes her

Although some students may secretly wish their teacher would experience an unfortunate accident, one woman says she was in her classroom when a cabinet fell and struck her.

Dee Anna Halbert of Groves filed suit against Miner-Dederick Construction on Aug. 31 in Jefferson County District Court, alleging the company negligently failed to install the cabinet in her classroom.

According to the lawsuit, on March 15, 2010, Halbert was in the classroom at Sam Houston Elementary School in Port Arthur when cabinets fell off the wall and struck her.

In her suit, Halbert claims she injured her right leg, left foot and head.

She is suing for her alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages, plus all court costs.

Beaumont attorney James Payne of Provost Umphrey represents her.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.

Case No. A190-794
