A Jefferson County woman claims she incurred medical costs after a driver caused a single-vehicle accident.

Mildred Grant filed a lawsuit Sept. 6 in Jefferson County District Court against Wilford Carmon Jr. and Highway 27 Motors.

In her complaint, Grant alleges she rode in a vehicle Carmon drove in Beaumont on Oct. 23, 2011, when Carmon caused a single-vehicle collision. Grant does not specify how the collision occurred.

Because of the accident, Grant incurred medical costs, experienced physical pain and suffering, sustained mental anguish and lost earnings, according to the complaint. He also endured physical impairment and incurred property damages, the suit states.

Grant blames Carmon for causing the collision, saying he negligently failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to maintain control of his vehicle, drove too fast, failed to timely apply his brakes, failed to exercise ordinary care, failed to turn to avoid a collision, failed to keep the same distance a person using ordinary care would have and failed to drive within a single lane.

She also names Carmon’s employer, Highway 27 Motors, as a defendant, saying it entrusted its vehicle to Carmon, who was a reckless and incompetent driver, the complaint says.

In her complaint, Grant seeks a judgment in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief the court deems just.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
