HEB sues appraisal district over property value

Heb store

A Beaumont company has filed suit against the Jefferson County Appraisal District, saying it is being charged too much in property taxes.

H.E. Butt Grocery Co. claims its appraised property value exceeds the median value of a number of comparable properties. In turn, H.E. Butt is paying too much in property taxes, according to the complaint filed Sept. 27 in Jefferson County District Court.

In its complaint, H.E. Butt is seeking an unspecified judgment, plus costs, attorneys’ fees and other relief the court deems just. It is also asking the court to fix the property’s appraised value and to ensure equal treatment of all property values.

Mark Hutcheson and David Hugin of Popp Hutcheson in Austin will be representing it.

The case has been assigned to Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court.

Case No. E193-230
