Lawsuit claims Bacliff motorist crashed into Seabrook couple's home

GALVESTON - A Seabrook couple seeks damages after an alleged drunk driver crashed into their home almost two years ago.

Recent court documents filed April 5 in Galveston County District Court target Bacliff local Engin Calbas and Donald Norman, also of Seabrook, over the June 11, 2011, incident.

The lawsuit alleges Calbas drove a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette belonging to Norman "at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle" and found his way into Saro and Edwin Draviam's residence.

"At the time of the collision, Mr. Calbas was intoxicated," the original petition says.

It does not say whether the Draviams suffered injuries of any kind immediately after the subject event.

Calbas is blamed for:

  • Failing to maintain a proper lookout;

  • Failing to timely apply the brakes; and

  • Operating the Corvette without the normal use of his physical and mental faculties.

He is also believed to have a "prior history of drug abuse."

Meanwhile, the suit faults Norman for negligently entrusting the car to Calbas.

The complainants consequently seek a total of $225,000 in damages.

They are represented by attorney Keith Gross of League City.

Galveston County 56th District Court Judge Lonnie Cox is presiding over the litigation.
