City of Sherman sued for firing purchasing agent after 27 years

SHERMAN - After 27 years of employment with the city of Sherman, a purchasing clerk claims she was terminated due to her age and has filed a lawsuit against the city.

Mary Ann Smith filed suit on June 21 in the Eastern District of Texas, Sherman Division. 

Smith was employed by the city of Sherman for more than 27 years, when she was demoted from her position as purchasing agent to billing clerk. On April 4, 2012, she was terminated. At the time of her termination, she was 56 years of age.

The defendant is accused of violating the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

The plaintiff is seeking an award of damages for liquidated damages, mental anguish, punitive damages, attorney’s fees, court costs and interest.

Smith is represented by Sherman attorney Ronald R. Huff. A jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Richard A. Schell is assigned to the case.
