Pasadena woman says electric golf cart caught fire, burned house down

HOUSTON - Alleging an exploding electric golf cart destroyed her Pasadena home and all of her possessions, Joy A. Zinante has filed a lawsuit.

Zinante sued Drive Electric LLC and Zone Electric Car LLC for the incident in question in Harris County District Court on May 23.

The lawsuit was transferred June 21 to the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas.

Recent court papers show a relative of the plaintiff's bought the subject vehicle, which needs to be charged by being plugged into an electrical outlet.

Said cart was in the midst of a charging cycle at Zinante's house when it burst into flames and burned down the residence, the original petition says.

It attributes the blaze to a design defect.

The defendants are faulted for:

  • Failing to warn of a known hazard;

  • Creating latent dangers, but failing to warn of same; and

  • Creating the unsafe design of an electric golf cart.

A jury trial is requested.

Attorney Christopher J. Leavitt of The Buzbee Law Firm in Houston is representing Zinante.

Case No. 4:13-CV-1820
