A life insurance company is being sued for failing to pay interest allegedly owed to a beneficiary.

Jamie Carter filed a lawsuit April 14 in the Jefferson County Court against American General Life Insurance Co.

The complaint states American General issued an insurance policy on the life of Robert Lamar Damrel.

The plaintiff states Damrel died Jan. 21, 1996, but the defendant failed to pay the beneficiary, Carter, until Oct. 18, 2012. The plaintiff is seeking interest from the date that Damrel's death was entered into the Social Security Administration's Death Master File.

Carter is seeking disgorgment of earnings, damages, statutory treble damages, exemplary damages, interest and fees.

The plaintiff is being represented in the case by Clint W. Lewis of The Lewis Law Firm.
