'Record' columnist named chair of Bar Journal editorial board

The Texas Bar Journal has announced the appointment of Dallas attorney John G. Browning as chairman of the publication's editorial board.

Browning writes the "Legally Speaking" column that appears frequently in the Southeast Texas Record and several other legal publications in the state.

He is currently a litigator at Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP in Dallas where he represents defendants in civil litigation and personal injury cases.

Browning graduated from  the University of Texas School of Law in 1989, where he received the Vision & Elkins Scholarship, West Publishing Award and Corpus Juris Secundum Award.

He has been serving on the Bar  Journal editorial board as a board member for a number of years.

Browning recently received the 2014 Burton Award for Distinguished Achievement in Legal Writing for "Keep Your 'Friends' Close and Your Enemies Closer: Walking the Ethical Tightrope in the Use of Social Media," published in the St. Mary's Journal of Legal Malpractice and Ethics in 2013. It was his fourth win of the Burton Award.

He was also the winner of the 2013 Jim D. Bowmer Professionalism Award presented by the College of the State Bar of Texas, which recognizes a Texas lawyer and College member whose contributions to professionalism have furthered the College’s goals, elevated the prestige of the legal profession, promoted legal ethics, furthered lawyers’ continuing education and served as an example to others.

According to the Lewis Brisbois website, Browning has written several books, including "The Lawyer’s Guide to Social Networking: Understanding Social Media’s Impact on the Law," "Strategies for Successful Arbitration" and "The Biggest Legal Mistakes Physicians Make and How to Avoid Them."

Since 2004, Browning has written and annually updated the Texas Employment Law chapter on non-competes and trade secrets.

He has been serving as an adjunct professor of law at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law since 2010 and at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law since 2011. 

In addition to writing "Legally Speaking," Browning also serves as a contributing editor for Dallas CEO magazine, and has been a legal columnist for the Dallas Business Journal and Houston Business Journal.

His work has garnered numerous journalism awards, including the Clarion Award for Outstanding Newspaper Column; the Suburban Newspaper Association’s Best Column Writing Award; the Texas Press Association’s Outstanding Column Award; the Press Club of Dallas’ Katie Award for Best Specialty Reporting; the Houston Press Club’s Lone Star Awards for Outstanding Commentary/Criticism in a Newspaper (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011) and Print Journalist of the Year (2009); six Philbin Awards for Excellence in Legal Reporting; and in 2007 he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism.
