Our View: Will Loopy Lehmberg get revenge she doesn’t deserve?

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it now.

It is the video that was shot when Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg was arrested in April 2013 for drunk driving.

Lehmberg looks looped, plastered, smashed, bombed, besotted, sloshed and blotto. She's completely round the bend, as if she's had one too many and then some.

She makes Foster Brooks look like a teetotaler.

“I'm not drunk,” she keeps insisting, her words heavily slurred.

She's so completely uncooperative that the young female officers booking her are reluctant to remove the handcuffs binding her.

“Get these cuffs off of me,” she growls over and over.

The cuffs remain, and she's placed in a large restraining device as well, and reminded how she had earlier resisted officers patting her down and banged and kicked on the door of a holding room.

The five-minute video, which captures several shots of her clenching her teeth and glaring and making other hostile faces toward the camera, concludes with the potted perp blowing a raspberry and pointing her finger like a gun at police personnel.

Having made a menace of herself while protesting her innocence and emphasizing her status as district attorney, Lehmberg – with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit – ultimately pled guilty to drunk driving.

Finding her behavior inappropriate for a law enforcement official, Gov. Rick Perry asked Lehmberg to resign. When she refused, he threatened to – and ultimately did – veto funding for her public corruption unit.

Now that a Travis County grand jury has indicted Perry on charges of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant (i.e., Lehmberg), the disorderly DA seems to be out to get her revenge.

In using our state legal system for partisan political purposes, however, Loopy Lehmberg has only succeeded in proving, once again, that she is utterly unfit to serve as Travis County District Attorney – or in any other position of public trust.
