Suit alleges Galveston man driving drunk when crashing into armored truck

A Galveston man is accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that seriously injured his passenger.

Azariel Sanchez filed a lawsuit against Lamont Poinsette on Aug. 12 in Galveston County District Court.

According to the complaint, Poinsette was driving while intoxicated April 7 with Sanchez as his passenger. Sanchez says Poinsette was speeding when he "struck a 2-foot wall and then slammed into an armored truck." As a result of the collision, the passenger alleges he received serious injuries to his neck, chest, ribs, back, head, ankles and feet.

Sanchez accuses Poinsette of negligence for allegedly driving while drunk, failing to maintain a proper speed, failing to keep the vehicle under control and failing to avoid a crash. Sanchez is seeking more than $1 million in actual, exemplary and punitive damages for medical expenses, physical impairment, loss of earning capacity, pain, suffering and mental anguish.

Attorneys Sean E. O'Rourke and Nicholas Simon, of Houston, represent Sanchez. They seek a jury trial.

The case number is Galveston County District Court case 14-CV-0856
