BEAUMONT – A sizeable portion of the Jefferson County trial bar showed up for the Jan. 3 swearing in ceremony of the 60th District Court’s newest judge, Justin Sanderson, who succeeds his father, Gary Sanderson.

Judge Gary Sanderson had presided over the 60th since 1981. His son, a Democrat, ran uncontested last year after his father announced his retirement.

Judge Courtney Arkeen, 128th District Court, was the master of ceremonies. And the out-going Gary Sanderson administered the oath of office.

Justin Sanderson’s long-time friend, Mark Sparks of Mostyn Law, introduced him, telling the large audience “great lawyers make great judges.”

“We all know Justin; we grew up with him, laughed with him and practiced law with him,” Sparks said.

The audience showered Justin Sanderson with a standing ovation after his father finished swearing him in.

Justin Sanderson then thanked his father for being a great mentor and friend.
