Slip in the tub results in $1M suit against Motel 6

Slip01

BEAUMONT – A Bay City man alleging he slipped while in the tub nearly two years ago recently sued the owners of a Port Arthur Motel 6.

Seeking up to $1 million in damages, Lawrence Matthews filed suit against Kemchho Inc. and Jay Ashapuri Maa Hospitality on May 3 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, on June 12, 2015, Matthews slipped and fell in the bathtub because Motel 6 failed to provide anti-slip material. As a result, he injured his left hand, ribs and left eye.

The suit alleges the Motel 6 owners should “have known the bath tub would be slippery.”

Matthews further alleges the defendants negligently failed to warn and protect him from the dangerous condition.

On top of exemplary damages, he is suing for his past and future mental anguish, lost earnings, impairment, disfigurement and medical expenses.

Matthews is represented by Cynthia Huerta, attorney for the Houston law firm Schechter McElwee, Shaffer & Harris.

Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, has been assigned to the case.
