HOUSTON — A Grenada woman is suing American Airlines, alleging negligence caused in-flight injuries to the plaintiff.

Ashley Maria Gittens filed a complaint June 5 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against American Airlines Inc., alleging the airline breached its duty to passengers to provide a safe flight.

According to the complaint, on Oct. 1, 2015, aboard Flight 982 from Grenada to Miami, Gittens was injured when she was thrown about violently when the aircraft pitched in turbulence. The suit says Gittens hit her head, neck and back against the hard surfaces of the lavatory.

The plaintiff alleges American's flight dispatchers recklessly chose a route for the flight that placed the airplane in close proximity to Hurricane Joaquin, a category 4 hurricane.

Gittens seeks trial by jury, judgment in an amount sufficient to compensate her fully and fairly, prejudgment interest, costs of court, and all further relief the court deems just. She is represented by attorneys Muhammad S. Aziz of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Aziz in Houston, and by John D. McKay of Park Avenue Law LLC in Winter Park, Florida.
