BEAUMONT – An African-American teacher alleges that a school district subjected her to discrimination because of her race and age.

Terrasita Lewis filed a complaint on Dec. 6, 2017, in the Jefferson County District Court against Beaumont Independent School District alleging age and race discrimination.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was employed as a teacher by the defendant. She alleges she applied to teach second grade multiple times but younger, white females with less experience were chosen. The suit states the plaintiff later accepted a position with Port Arthur Independent School District in March 2015 but was later rehired by the defendant in August 2015.

The plaintiff holds Beaumont Independent School District responsible because the defendant allegedly discriminated against her in connection with compensation or terms, conditions and privileges of employment because of her age (mid-40s) and race and retaliated against her for opposing discriminatory practices.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks monetary relief of more than $300,000 and such other lawful and equitable relief. She is represented by Terrence A. Allison of Allison Law Firm in Beaumont.
