HOUSTON – A tenant is suing a Texas City apartment complex, alleging that the smoke detectors were not working to alert her when her apartment building caught fire, causing her to be burned during her escape.

Plaintiff Meaghan Wilson filed the lawsuit in the Harris County Circuit Court against Savan Villas, LLC, citing premise liability and gross negligence.

According to the lawsuit, Wilson was a resident of a Texas City apartment complex owned and operated by Savan Villas, LLC. She alleges that on Jan. 30, 2022, while she was at home, she heard popping sounds and believed them to be the sounds of her neighbor cooking outdoors. She states that when she opened her front door to check on the noise, she saw that the entire building was on fire. According to Wilson, upon discovering the fire, she retrieved her child and immediately fled the building. She claims that during the course of her escape, she noticed that there was no sound from the fire alarms to warn her of the fire.

The complaint claims the building did not have smoke detectors installed when the fire occurred. The defendant is also accused of failing to properly provide proper warning to tenants of the dangerous condition of the building and renting the apartment in an unsafe condition.

The lawsuit claims that while escaping from the fire, Wilson sustained injuries that caused her to experience pain, suffering, mental anguish, disfigurement, and physical impairment. She adds that she has incurred medical expenses and will continue to require the services of medical staff to recover from her injuries.

The plaintiff is seeking damages plus interest, court costs, and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Joshua Hilbe of Brian White & Associates, P.C. in Houston.
