Worker trips over landscaping paper, sues ExxonMobil

An area resident has brought a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, seeking no more than $200,000 damages after he tripped on landscaping paper more than a year ago. John Hart filed the suit June 24 in Jefferson County District Court. According to his lawsuit, on Dec. 25, 2013, Hart, while at the direction and control of ExxonMobil, was a walking along a fence line when he tripped and feel over landscaping paper that was covered up by rocks.

Texas to receive $750M from $20.2B Deepwater Horizon agreement

Five years after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, BP and five Gulf Coast states reached an agreement in principle on July 2, consenting to a settlement worth $20.2 billion in damages and penalties. According to a press release, Texas will receive more than $750 million. “After five years, I’m proud to announce that Texas, along with the other Gulf Sstates, has reached an agreement in principle with BP to resolve all the states’ claims,” said Gov. Greg Abbott in a written statement.

Businesswoman claims libel, petitions court for restraining order against troubled stepson

A Montgomery County woman filed a lawsuit against her stepson alleging public defamation negligence in 2014 and thereafter. Theresa Roemer filed a petition against Maximillian Roemer of Galveston in Galveston County District Court June 29, seeking injunctive action to prevent him from engaging in public defamation, and claiming he is in violation of a previous settlement agreement between them made in August 2014. The suit states that the defendant is 32, single, unemployed and troubled.

Businessman sues Nacogdoches chief deputy alleging defamation and drug smuggling rumors

A resident filed a lawsuit against the chief deputy of a municipality alleging harassment and defamation in an undated complaint. Chet Driver filed suit against Stephen Godfrey of Nacogdoches in Tyler Division of the Eastern District of Texas June 24, claiming liability during an unspecified time period. According to the suit, Godfrey mistakenly told community members that the plaintiff owns a marijuana farm in California.
