A Harris County resident brought a lawsuit against her employer for alleged discrimination originating in 2014.
LaShaunda “Elle” Williams of Houston filed against Maersk Oil Co. in Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas on June 2, claiming civil rights violation in workplace incidents in September 2014 and thereafter.
According to the suit, the plaintiff, who is African-American, was hired by the defendant on or about June 9, 2014, in the capacity of managing about four individual administrative staffers.
The complaint states that Williams was given positive feedback during her first three months, but then allegedly began to observe disparate racial treatment in the workplace. She alleges that she was refused a salary increase on Sept. 9, 2014, while other staffers were granted raises.
The suit states that the plaintiff was given a poor evaluation on or about Jan. 28 following her complaint of dissatisfaction, which disqualified her for a bonus. She alleges that she was deliberately underpaid compared to non-black personnel and that she observed racially tinged comments in electronic staff communications.
Williams maintains that her employer engaged in retaliatory behavior following her filing a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Feb. 18, 2015, and cites the defendants with violations of statutory law.
Alleging humiliation, mental anguish and stress, the plaintiff seeks injunctive action; compensatory and punitive damages, pre- and post-judgment interest; attorney’s and expert witness fees; expenses, and costs. She is self-represented at this time.
