An insurance company is suing for workers' compensation benefits after a man holding a sign on the street for his employer was injured in a collision.

Safety National Casualty Corporation filed a lawsuit Oct. 8 in the Jefferson County District Court against James R. Owens, citing negligence.

According to the complaint, Owens was driving on Phelan Boulevard in Beaumont on Oct. 13, 2012, when he collided with two other vehicles, one of which struck Mark Williford Jr., who was standing near Boulevard Avenue holding a sign encouraging the public to visit his employer, Tuesday Morning.

The complaint states the plaintiff had issued a workers' compensation policy to Tuesday Morning prior to the incident and paid more than $21,000 in workers' compensation benefits to and on behalf of Williford, which could rise if additional medical treatment is needed. Owens is accused of negligence for allegedly failing to yield right of way and driver inattention.

Safety National Casualty seeks more than $21,000 in actual damages plus costs of court and interest. It is represented by attorney Laura D. Schmidt of Downs Standford in Dallas.
