A Jefferson County woman is blaming poor treatment by a local doctor and hospital for a staph infection that left dimished use of her hand.
Leona Dugas filed a lawsuit against Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth and Dr. Edward Collins on April 2 in Jefferson County District Court.
Dugas visited Dr. Collins on Jan. 31, 2005, for treatment of a lesion on her left hand, including an injection into the lesion.
The plaintiff developed a post-injection staph infection and sought medical attention at Christus from Dr. Michael Stafford.
Defendants "failed to properly treat said infection," the plaintiff's original petition states. "Due to the negligence of both parties, plaintiff required further treatment, hospitalization, extensive therapy and ultimately the loss of full use of her left hand."
The plaintiff seeks damages for physical and mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of earning capacity and exemplary damages.
