Letter to the editor: Tort reforms have helped Texas economy

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor

In his recent State of the State address, Gov. Rick Perry noted that Texas has greatly benefited from reforms to our medical liability system.

Those changes have decreased the number of frivolous and abusive health care lawsuits, led to a marked increase in the number of doctors and specialists practicing in Texas and allowed our local hospitals to spend more money on charity care and updating their emergency rooms instead of on lawsuits.

We've also made great strides in assuring our legal climate conveys an "open for business" attitude.

Our current climate is one reason that Texas ranks as a top state for business and recently surpassed other states as the home to the most Fortune 500 company headquarters.

And while every state will feel the effects of the current economic downturn, our business and litigation climate may help Texas weather the worst of this crisis.

Sincerely,

Michelle Martin
