Dipstick injury leads to suit against ship company

A Florida man has filed suit against Global Geophysical Services, alleging he was injured while working on a ship for the company.

Templeton Salter was working aboard the Global Scout on Aug. 22 when he tore his rotator cuff after attempting to retrieve an oil dipstick in the ship's engine room.

According to the complaint filed Feb. 19 in Jefferson County District Court, Salter sustained physical pain, mental anguish, physical impairment, discomfort, mental anguish and distress as a result of his injuries.

He also suffered a loss of earnings and incurred medical expenses, he claims.

Global was negligent by failing to properly supervise its crew, by failing to properly train its employees, by failing to provide adequate safety equipment, by failing to properly secure the equipment, by failing to provide adequate medical treatment, by operating the vessel in an improper and unsafe manner and by failing to maintain the vessel, according to the complaint.

The company also negligently failed to maintain, inspect and repair the vessel's equipment, the suit states.

Although Salter is entitled to maintenance and cure from Global, the company has not paid for it, he claims.

Salter is seeking a judgment in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, costs and other relief to which he may be entitled.

He is represented by Kurt B. Arnold and Paul Skrabanek of Arnold and Itkin in Houston.

The case has been assigned to Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court.
