Nursing home employee alleges termination due to cancer diagnosis

A woman has filed suit against her former employer, alleging she was wrongly terminated after her employer discovered she had breast cancer.

Elda Sequeira claims she began working as an office manager for Senior Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center. During the course of her employment, Sequeira was diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the complaint filed March 8 in Jefferson County District Court.

"She had to undergo chemotherapy treatments, and during this process, Plaintiff still managed to continue working 40-plus hours a week," the suit states. "When Senior Nursing Home was made aware of Plaintiff's diagnosis and treatment, she was demoted. While Plaintiff was still undergoing chemotherapy treatments, her employer decided she was no longer needed and terminated her employment."

In her complaint, Sequeira seeks actual, compensatory and exemplary damages, plus costs, attorneys' fees, pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief the court deems just.

E. Hart Green of Weller, Green, Toups and Terrell in Beaumont will be representing her.

The case has been assigned to Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court.

Jefferson County District Court case number: A186-213.
