HPV cells

A Beaumont woman is suing her ex-husband for giving her a sexually transmitted disease.

Sandra Swanson filed suit against Richard Gagne on Dec. 27 in Jefferson County District Court.

Court records show Swanson learned in 2002 that she contracted genital human papillomavirus. According to the plaintiff's original complaint, Swanson claims she informed her then-husband, Gagne, who confessed he contracted the HPV disease from a "girl named Bunny."

Since the two were married from December 2002 to December 2008, Swanson contends Gagne owed her a legal duty to prevent the "communication of harmful disease to the plaintiff."

"Defendant breached the duty to plaintiff by infecting her with HPV," the suit states, adding that her injury entitles her to damages for her mental anguish and medical expenses.

Swanson is also suing for property her husband was awarded during their divorce.

She is represented by Beaumont attorney Craig Schexaider.

The case has been assigned to Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court.
