Woman claims neck, back injuries after being rear-ended

A Port Arthur woman claims she sustained injuries to her neck, back and body after a driver rear-ended her vehicle.

Angelique Perrin filed a lawsuit May 17 in Jefferson County District Court against Julian Marion Barnerd III.

Perrin claims she stopped at a light governing an intersection on Martin Luther King in Beaumont on Jan. 26, 2009, when Barnerd crashed into the rear of her vehicle.

In addition to her injuries, Perrin incurred medical costs because of the collision; experienced physical pain, suffering and physical impairment; and lost earnings, according to the complaint. She also suffered mental anguish, the suit states.

Perrin blames Barnerd for causing the collision, saying he negligently failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to turn his vehicle to the left or right to avoid a collision, failed to maintain a reasonable distance between his vehicle and Barnerd's, failed to keep the same distance a person exercising reasonable care would have, drove too fast and failed to timely apply his brakes.

In her complaint, Perrin seeks a judgment within the jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus pre-judgment interest at the maximum rate allowed by law, post-judgment interest at the legal rate, costs and other relief to which she may be entitled.

Trent Devenzio of McCall and Devenzio in Beaumont will be representing her.

The case has been assigned to Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court.

Jefferson County District Court case number: D186-881.
