Tekoa Charter School files for a TRO against Orange church

Hoping to remain in its Orange location, Tekoa Charter School is seeking a temporary restraining order against its landlord, Greater St. Paul Christian Fellowship, and the Rev. R.C. Young.

The TRO application was filed June 1 in Orange County District Court to stop the church from terminating the school's lease.

Court papers show that on Aug. 1 Tekoa and St. Paul entered into a lease agreement in which Tekoa would lease one of the church's buildings on N. 14th Street for $1,300 a month.

Since September, Tekoa alleges the church has made outrageous demands for utility payments and threatening to shut off the electricity.

On May 29, Young served the school with a notice of lease termination.

"This imminent harm will cause plaintiff irreparable injury in that plaintiffs will be unable to continue the school year, enroll students for the coming summer session and operate," the suit suit states.

Tekoa also says it has invested in radio and television advertisements and has sunk $50,000 into repairing the school building -- all of which would be lost if evicted.

The school is represented by attorney Kent Johns.

Judge Dennis Powell, 163rd Judicial District, has been assigned to the case.
