Ownership of trust fund subject of petition

A Jefferson County joint stock association has filed an interpleader petition, saying it is unsure where to deposit more than $800,000 after the member of a trust fund died.

Samson Lone Star claims it has set aside more than $800,000 for the trustees of The Lanman Co., who own one-eighth of an interest in the oil, gas and other mineral rights of a tract from the Broussard Deed of 1966.

One of the 11 known trustees, Leone M. Lanman, is thought to have died in Canada, and Samson has attempted to determine the owner of her trust, but has been unable to do so, according to the complaint filed Sept. 29 in Jefferson County District Court.

In its petition, Samson is seeking an order to appoint an attorney to represent the interests of Leone M. Lanman and an order that allows it to deposit funds into the registry of Jefferson County District Court.

It also seeks an order directing the district clerk to provide a Federal Tax Identification Number so Samson does not have to withhold 31 percent for taxes. Attorneys' fees, costs and other relief the court deems just are also requested in the suit.

Samson will be represented by James P. Barnett Jr. and Kristopher L. Sanders of James P. Barnett Jr. and Associates in Houston.

The case has been assigned to Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court.
