Physician blamed for allowing man to die from renal failure

On behalf of the deceased Andrew Stephens, Alice Stephens has filed suit against Dr. Syed Zaheer, alleging he negligently failed to diagnose and treat the 62 year old.

The suit was filed Nov. 29 in Orange County District Court.

According to the suit, between Sept. 28, 2008, and Sept. 30, 2008, Andrew Stephens was brought to the Memorial Hermann Baptist Orange Hospital emergency room three times, with complaints of vomiting, fever and diarrhea.

"After the first ER visit, despite suffering from severe dehydration and renal failure, Andrew was discharged by Dr. Zaheer," the suit states, adding that on the third visit Andrew was finally admitted to intensive care.

Diagnosed with renal failure and pneumonia, on Oct. 2, 2008, Andrew Stephens was transferred to Baptist Hospital for dialysis, where he remained until he died 22 days later.

The suit alleges Dr. Zaheer negligently failed to properly evaluate Andrews during his first ER visit.

Alice Stephens, his wife, is suing for loss of consortium and all wrongful death damages allowable under law.

She is represented by Beaumont attorney Barry Bennett of Eddins & Bennett.

Judge Dennis Powell, 163rd District Court, has been assigned to the case.
