Post discovery sought by Christus following bedsore trial

Cooksey

Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth filed a certificate of discovery earlier this month, submitting a post-judgment request to Ronald Lee Lewis, who lost his case against the hospital in July.

Lewis, a Silsbee resident, sued Christus in May 2009, alleging he developed ulcers, an infection from bedsores and pneumonia after his stay at the Beaumont hospital.

Court records show Lewis was a patient at St. Elizabeth for continuing medical care from Feb. 14 to March 24, 2007.

As previously reported, the case went to trial and on July 29 jurors found no negligence on the part of Christus, court papers say.

The jury was asked if Lewis' bedsores were caused by the negligence of nurses at Christus, answering the jury charge by writing an emphatic "No!"

On Feb. 7 Christus filed its post judgment discovery request, submitting its interrogatories in aid of judgment and requests for production in aid of judgment, court records show.

Lewis had been seeking a new trial on grounds that a Christus attorney characterized him as "sitting there like a Buddha" during the trial, according to his motion for new trial, filed Aug. 27.

However, Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, denied the motion on Sept. 16.

Lewis is represented by Brett S. Thomas of Roebuck, Thomas, Roebuck and Adams in Beaumont.

Woodlands attorney Curry Cooksey of Orgain Bell & Tucker represents Christus.
