Benzene suit filed against Shell Chemical for man's exposure 50 years ago

Hyde

Five decades ago, James Crawford claims he was exposed to benzene. Now, he suffers from a blood disorder and blames Shell Chemical for selling the benzene that allegedly caused the disease.

Crawford filed suit against Shell on March 9 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to his petition, from 1953 to 1962 Crawford was regularly exposed to benzene and benzene products during his employment with Texas Gas Corp.

"As a result of such exposure, James Crawford developed a serious blood disorder," the suit states.

However, the suit does not state what type of blood disorder he developed.

Crawford alleges Shell negligently manufactured and sold benzene products without warning workers of the dangers.

The plaintiff is suing for his alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages, plus all court costs.

Beaumont attorney Keith Hyde of Provost Umphrey is representing him.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 6oth District Court, has been assigned to the case.

Case No. B189-567
