GALVESTON – Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. has filed suit against the Whirlpool Corp. on behalf of a Santa Fe couple who claim they bought a defective washing machine.
Whirlpool sold the washing machine which allegedly caused a water leak at the home of Trent and Laura Lyons on May 30, 2009, a lawsuit filed March 14 in Galveston County District Court states.
The unit was approximately two years old at the time.
"Upon expert inspection of the washing machine, the leak was determined to be caused by a split in the corrugations of the drain hose of the unit," the suit says. "The root cause of the leak was determined to be a manufacturing defect."
Whirlpool is blamed for negligence and strict product liability.
Nationwide seeks approximately $12,000 in monetary damages.
The Law Office of Ronald B. Hurdle is representing the insurer.
Galveston County 212th District Court Judge Susan Criss is presiding over the case.
