Benzene suit faults 22 companies for man's illness

Hyde

Henry Marino and his wife, Donia, are suing Chevron USA and 21 other companies, alleging the defendants negligently manufactured and sold benzene products.

The suit was filed May 17 in Jefferson County District Court.

The other defendants named in the suit include Atlantic Richfield, Beazer East, BP Amoco Chemical, BP Products North America, Dow Chemical, DuPont, ExxonMobil Oil, Exxon Mobil Corp., Goodrich, Honeywell International, Huntsman Petrochemical, Koppers, Mobil Oil refining, Radiator Specialty, Sunco, Texaco, Total Petrochemicals UA, Union Carbide, Union Oil and United States Steel.

Court records show that Marino was exposed to benzene while working at the defendants' Jefferson County premises.

The suit does not give dates of employment.

Because of his exposure, Marino now suffers from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, the suit alleges.

The plaintiffs allege the defendants manufactured and sold benzene products without testing for health hazards and warning workers of the dangers.

They are suing for punitive damages.

Beaumont attorney Keith Hyde of Provost Umphrey represents them.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 6oth District Court, has been assigned to the case.

Case No. B190-012
