Slippery meat aisle results in suit against Wal-Mart

By David Yates | Aug 30, 2011

While strolling through the meat department at the Port Arthur Wal-Mart, Mary Jane Bonura slipped and fell on a water puddle leaking from a cooler.

On Aug. 24 Bonura and her husband Jay filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart, Tyler Refrigeration, Hill Phoenix and Dover Corp. in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, on Aug. 24, 2009, Bonura was shopping at the Wal-Mart on Memorial Boulevard when she slipped and fell on the liquid.

The suit accuses Wal-Mart of negligently failing to identify and eliminate the risk and also failing to warn shoppers of the danger.

The other defendants are accused of negligently failing to maintain the leaky ice cooler.

Bonura is suing for her alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages, plus all court costs.

Her husband is suing for loss of consortium.

They are represented by the Law Offices of Gilbert T. Adams in Beaumont.

Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, has been assigned to the case.

Case No. D190-722
