Nederland man claims Chevron fired him over on-the-job injury

Nederland resident Paul Pierce claims he was fired for suffering an on-the-job injury.

He filed suit against this former employer, Chevron USA, on Aug. 31 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, Pierce first injured his knee while in the course and scope of his employment with Chevron on June 6, 2010. Following surgery and rehabilitation, Pierce returned to work in October. A month later, Pierce had a second work-related incident.

"Plaintiff was told to leave work immediately and not to return until called back," the suit states. "On Nov. 29, 2010, plaintiff was terminated due to his on-the-job injury and was told it has (sic) 'to make an example out of him.'"

Pierce alleges he was fired for seeking worker's compensation and is suing to recover damages for his mental anguish and lost wages.

Beaumont attorney Jane Leger of Provost Umphrey represents him.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
